Episode 105 - AJ McGinty - Finding Hope and Positivity After a Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis

Kathy Chester

Anthony (AJ) McGinty's MS journey began when he experienced symptoms of fuzzy vision when he was traveling for work, leading to a full diagnosis six years ago. Like so many of us, before being diagnosed, he had no experience or knowledge of MS. As you'll hear, he and I share a lot of the same views about the importance of exercise and staying active when you have MS.

In this episode, Anthony shares his personal journey of being diagnosed with MS and how he initially struggled to adjust to having a chronic illness at a relatively young age. Despite initial denial and shock, AJ now says that his life has actually improved post-diagnosis. He got married, became a parent, and discovered new career opportunities. This optimistic perspective on life in the presence of MS reflects his belief that the condition does not have to define your entire existence.

AJ's advice for newly diagnosed people is to stay positive, avoid negative stories online, and seek support from the MS community. He emphasizes the importance of staying active and finding ways to adapt to the changes MS brings. His commitment to supporting others with MS is evident from his advocacy work, including his involvement in the upcoming Tap MS Out fundraiser on March 30th.

Anthony's biggest triumphs, including becoming a black belt in jiu-jitsu and winning pro grappling matches, highlight his strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. His positive outlook and determination to stay active and healthy for his family are truly inspiring.
